Are Emerging Markets Investable?
Since the 1988 launch of the MSCI Emerging Markets Index, emerging markets equities have captured the imagination of investors hoping to capitalize on robust economic, consumer, and income growth in the developing world. Indeed, the number of countries in emerging markets has more than doubled in the last three decades and the asset class now includes dozens of blue-chip companies that compete globally with developed markets firms. However, even as emerging market economies and companies have grown exponentially, market returns have faltered. Emerging Market equities have now underperformed US markets for nine of the last ten years, leaving many frustrated investors to question the viability of the asset class or abandon it outright.
This round table discussion considers exactly this question – whether emerging markets can still play a role in a well-diversified equity portfolio in the future. The speakers will address some of the key opportunities and risks in emerging markets today, offering perspectives and insights into the asset class through the lens of individual country and company examples.
